Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Nursing Specialty

Is the Step-Down or PCU Travel Nursing Specialty Right for You?

Where do patients go when they no longer require intensive care unit medical treatment, but they are not quite ready to go to the medical-surgical floor? At many hospitals and healthcare facilities, during this transitional phase to basic medical care, patients go to what they call step-down or progress care units (PCUs).

Step-down travel nurses provide care to patients that need close monitoring and frequent assessments. In contrast to ICU patients, PCU patients are more stable and do not require the level of care that is provided on ICU units. PCU travel nurses monitor patient vital signs and cardiac monitoring in order to quickly and effectively identify any marked changes in the patient’s condition and notify appropriate personnel and make confident decisions when needed for the best possible patient health outcomes. If any life-threatening condition should arise, these nurses are competent and have the skills it takes to step in providing emergency care.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities across the nation are increasing their use of high-tech equipment and nurses who work in step-down units need to be proficient with the set-up and maintenance of such equipment. Step-down and PCU travel nurses are often the ones who provide care to patients who have just been released from ICU units, but they remain at high risk for the development of complications. These travel nurses need to be sharp, attentive, and highly skilled in order to take the appropriate actions when problems arise.

Some of the common conditions that patients have who end up on step-down or PCU units include:

  • Renal failure
  • Sleep disorders
  • Epilepsy
  • Cancer
  • COPD
  • Cardiac surgery
  • Neurological problems

Some of the typical duties of PCU travel nurses include the careful monitoring and review of vital signs and telemetry data, medication administration, communication with patients and family, and the maintenance of telemetry equipment.

Job Skills / Requirements for PCU Nurses:

  • Valid BLS and ACLS from the American Heart Association
  • A valid professional license within the state of practice
  • Specialty-related certifications are preferred and may be required for specific positions
  • Proof of right to work in the United States
  • Experience as a telemetry RN in a hospital setting
