They provide care to facilitate the delivery of babies with a team of physicians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals.
Most often referred to as L&D travel nurses, these nurses provide care to women with problematic and normal pregnancies. They educate patients and families by giving them information, hands-on clinical care, and guidance. There are a few different settings in which you will find labor and delivery nurses working, such as hospitals, clinics, pediatric facilities, health clinics, OB/GYN outpatient offices, maternity and birthing centers. What does a typical labor and delivery nurse job description look like? During labor, the L&D nurse would monitor the length and strength of contractions and fetal heart tones. They also administer medications to the mother and are there to assist with any complications if they arise. Other duties of an L&D nurse might include attending prenatal visits and seeing patients during this time and providing education and family support for expecting mothers. During prenatal visits, an L&D nurse would monitor the patient using advanced equipment, enter pertinent patient data into the medical records system, spend time talking with expectant mothers, and provide a warm point of contact for women and families.
Registered nurses who work on L&D units also assist with labor inducement and designing infant delivery care plans with physicians.
