Labor & Delivery
Labor and Delivery (L&D) Travel Nursing Jobs
Qualified labor and delivery travel nurses are some of the most sought-after healthcare professionals in the United States. What is labor and delivery nursing? A labor and delivery nurse is one who assists the mother and families throughout the birthing process. They provide care to facilitate the delivery of babies with a team of physicians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals.
Most often referred to as L&D travel nurses, these nurses provide care to women with problematic and normal pregnancies. They educate patients and families by giving them information, hands-on clinical care, and guidance. L&D nurses are highly valued during the birth process and they are the key sources of information and support for not just the mother, but the entire family during and immediately after birth.
There are a few different settings in which you will find labor and delivery nurses working, such as hospitals, clinics, pediatric facilities, health clinics, OB/GYN outpatient offices, maternity and birthing centers. They are in charge of providing assistance to the midwife or physician with all areas of pregnancy and childbirth.
What does a typical labor and delivery nurse job description look like? During labor, the L&D nurse would monitor the length and strength of contractions and fetal heart tones. They also administer medications to the mother and are there to assist with any complications if they arise. Immediately following the birth, L&D travel nurses perform newborn tests and instruct the mother on all aspects of infant care and recovery. Other duties of an L&D nurse might include attending prenatal visits and seeing patients during this time and providing education and family support for expecting mothers. During prenatal visits, an L&D nurse would monitor the patient using advanced equipment, enter pertinent patient data into the medical records system, spend time talking with expectant mothers, and provide a warm point of contact for women and families.
Registered nurses who work on L&D units also assist with labor inducement and designing infant delivery care plans with physicians. Nurses who work in this specialty of nursing need to be competent in the entire birth process from antepartum to neonatal to the newborn nursery. Nurses who work in this field need to be compassionate and positive.
