Oncology Travel Nurses
Are you passionate about continued learning? Specializing as an oncology registered nurse could be right for you. The field of oncology is constantly developing; making advancements in science that provide patients with better treatments and care. Today's battle against cancer is different than it was only 10 years ago. Many cancer patients now survive their treatments and move on to be survivors.
Oncology travel nurses work mostly with patients who are undergoing cancer treatments or are in remission. As you may expect, working with cancer patients is not for the faint of heart. You will be an important person in their lives; serving as a guide of knowledge, a familiar face during treatments, and a consistent presence in their cancer journey. You will have the opportunity to build a rapport and with your patients and likely their families as well.
Oncology travel RNs must have the desire to work in a field that is constantly changing and exploring new treatment options. They must be caring and willing to assess not only their patients' physical health, but also assess their mental health. A cancer diagnosis can be world-shattering, and working with diagnosed patients with the emotional pain, anxiety, and fear on their coping skills is also a part of this specialty.
Travel nurses working in oncology typically find jobs in hospitals, although some positions may be found in outpatient facilities or sometimes home health. In addition to direct care, some oncology nurses can find themselves working more on cancer prevention and cancer screening. Duties you can expect to perform as an oncology nurse include:
- Educate patients and families regarding the cancer treatment expectations
- Provide resource referrals to families and patients
- Develop care plans unique to each patient's diagnosis and needs
- Cooperate and communicate with patients' team of cancer clinicians
- Observe with keen attention to detail patients' progress on a continuum
- Document patient progress and response to treatment
- Administer medications
Oncology nurses can also choose a focus or niche within the specialization of oncology. As you choose a niche, various certifications are also available to keep your knowledge current and give your patients and employers (and you!) confidence in your abilities.
